Real Quail Farming Lesson: Managing Brooder Heat at Night By JoshTech Agri Expert Farm – Kampala, Uganda

Quail farming is rewarding, but like every form of livestock farming, it requires constant observation and care—especially during the early days of raising chicks.

Last night at JoshTech Agri Farm, I experienced a very important lesson that every quail farmer should understand:
proper brooder temperature management.

This experience reminded me again that successful farming is not only about feeding birds but also about monitoring their environment closely.

What Happened During the Night
During the night, I woke up to check the brooder where the young quail chicks were being kept warm using a charcoal heating system.

When I checked the brooder, I noticed something unusual.
The chicks were running away from the heat source and moving toward the edges of the brooder.

This is one of the most important signs farmers should never ignore.

After observing the situation, I realized that the brooder temperature had become too high because I had added extra charcoal earlier.

Unfortunately, a few quail chicks could not tolerate the excessive heat and did not survive.

Although it was a difficult moment, it was also an important farming lesson.

Why Brooder Temperature Is So Important

Young quail chicks cannot regulate their body temperature properly during the first weeks of life.

This means farmers must provide the correct artificial heat source.

If the brooder temperature is not correct, chicks can become stressed or weak.

Farmers can easily know whether the temperature is correct by observing chick behavior.

How to Tell if Brooder Temperature Is Correct?

Quail chicks communicate their comfort through their behavior.

When quails chicks gather directly under the heat source
This usually means the brooder is too cold.

When chicks move far away from the heat source
This usually means the brooder is too hot.

When chicks spread evenly around the brooder

This means the temperature is comfortable.

Observation is one of the most powerful tools a farmer has.

Adjusting the Brooder

After noticing the excessive heat, I quickly removed some of the charcoal and lifted the heating pot slightly to reduce the temperature.

Once the heat was reduced, the remaining chicks became calm and started moving normally again.

This quick adjustment helped stabilize the brooder environment for the rest of the birds.

Farming Is a Continuous Learning Process

One thing I have learned from raising quails is that every day on the farm teaches a lesson.

Even experienced farmers must stay attentive.

Real farming is not about perfection—it is about learning, adjusting, and improving every day.
